Surface piercings can be placed virtually anywhere on the body. They are piercings that enter the skin, carry along the dermal layers for a short distance and exit through the same area of skin. Unlike, for example, the nostril piercing which enters through the outer skin of the nose, passes right through, and exits through the skin on the inside of the nose. A good example of a surface piercing is the eyebrow but some others are; Earl - through the bridge of the nose, Madison - front of neck between collarbones and Nuchae - back of the neck.
One of the main considerations with surface piercings is the longevity of them. Surface piercings are prone to 'growing out' or migration.The end result of this is the loss of the piercing. There is no way of being able to tell for definite how long a piercee will keep their piercing for, as it varies so much from person to person. On average it is between six months and two years, however some people can keep their piercing for much longer than this. Another thing that can affect the longevity of the piercing is the amount of movement that area of the body gets as the constant stretching and relaxing can also help a piercing to work it's way forward. A surface piercing will usually be initially fitted with a PTFE (implantable thermoplastic polymer) staple as we find that the flexibility of this material helps reduce the risks of the piercing growing out quickly. The staple can be fitted with titanium balls so the look is the same as that of a titanium barbell. Quite a few people, however, are drawn to the uniqueness of some of these piercings. They are popular with customers who just want a change from the norm - something that their friends don't have.
Healing time is on average 8-10 weeks.
